About the Course
This course is an introduction to intuitive narrative drawing. Together, we will explore how to tell a story with (&without!) words and how mark making, line quality, and color can influence our message. The formal elements of storytelling in the American art history canons of painting, drawing, and comics will be discussed in interactive lectures. Working parallel to our learning, we will exercise our hands and our spirits, through mindfulness exercises, drawing the world around us, and delving into our subconscious. Become empowered through drawing to tell your own story! Materials list available at sharonartstudio.org
Instructor: Mara Ramirez
Mara Ramirez is a nonbinary artist, educator, and caregiver making comics in the Bay Area, California. Their comics are mainly autobiographical and somewhat experimental, and concern matters of intimacy, trauma, and healing. They play with abstraction and the action of mark making as a means of distorting (and in doing so, clarifying) their own experiences through the filter of emotion and memory. These stories range in content: existentialism, gender, and childcare are some of the topics that have emphasis.
