About Us

A Public Art Center

Our Story

The Sharon Art Studio is San Francisco’s largest public community center for the arts. Housed in the landmark Sharon Building in Golden Gate Park near the Children’s Playground, the Sharon Art Studio was established in 1968.  In 1974, a fire gutted the building and the program was relocated to the old Fleishacker Pool Building near the San Francisco Zoo. In 1980, the program was moved again...

The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department administers more than 220 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces, including two outside the city limits-- Camp Mather in Yosemite Valley and Sharp Park in Pacifica, Calif. Our park system includes 25 recreation centers, nine swimming pools, five golf courses and numerous tennis courts, ball diamonds, soccer fields and other sports venues. Included in the department’s responsibilities is the Sharon Art Studio. The SFRPD has partnered for over 30 years with the non-profit organization, Friends of Sharon Art Studio to run the programs.
