Learn watercolor basics in this 9-week beginner's course. The class will be based on direct observation from life and stilllife. As such, the dynamics of visual perception along with activation of the right-brain faculties will be explored. We'll also practice mixing and applying watercolors upon wet and dry surfaces. CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING

Learn to paint landscapes, flowers, birds and other animals in the traditional Chinese style. Class will cover how to mount on rice paper, scroll making and how to cut your name into the stamping stone. This class gives you basic to intermediate instruction and you will have an opportunity to create a stepping stone, gazing ball, picture frame, mirror, flower pot, 2D wall hanging, and more. You will explore cutting techniques, adhesive choices, design layout and finish the piece with grouting selection. Please wear clothes you are not afraid to get dirty. Materials fee includes all materials to complete 2 projects. Additional materials will be available for purchase if desired.

In these semi-instructed drawing sessions you will learn to see and draw the clothed human form from direct observation of a live model. Part of the process will be learning how to draw folds and drapery on the figure. There will be short and long poses (1-20 minutes). Students should bring 8.5 x 11 or larger sketchbook or loose sheets and a ball point pen (wide). An additional fee will be collected by the instructor to cover the cost of the model.

Expressive Brushstrokes focuses on capturing the "essence" of nature's elements. Your paintings will
take on a fresh liveliness by learning a repertoire of spontaneous effective marks. We will work with natural forms—flora, leaves, foliage, trees, rocks; all the elements in the landscape. Applying color and light with luminous techniques to create glowing effects will enhance the brushstrokes. We will combine traditional wet and dry watercolor techniques in this class. Winter is just the right time to get motivated and start drawing. For the first half of this mini-course, the basic strategies of line contour, shading, and perspective are covered. The second half introduces how to creatively use watercolor washes and penlines. For the first class bring an 18"x24" newsprint pad, 4B and 6B graphite pencils, a 6B charcoal pencil, and a kneaded eraser.

During each class we'll warm up with exercises that awaken the right side of the brain. Through these and the construction of drawings, we should see more clearly things as we optically perceive them. We'll use pencil, charcoal, and ink to look closely at and draw from still-life, life and landscape outside the Sharon Building.
