Working with metal oxides and overglazes mixed with various oils creates what are known as "painting" enamels. Painting enamels give the enamelist a means to achieve fine detail and the immediacy of the hand-drawn line, as well as to simulate delicate watercolor washes. This enameling technique is sometimes known as Limoges. In this workshop you will learn how to prepare a small piece of copper prior to applying and firing painting enamels, how to prepare painting enamels, and the different methods of working with the materials.

Often mistaken for the wax resist process called batik, this "discharge" technique uses no hot wax or pots of dye. In the morning paint background colors and textures on a Crepe de Chine silk scarf. In the afternoon, choose from a variety of stamps and screens to print images on it with discharge paste. The final step is to steam iron the scarf. The steam will, bleach out the images to lighter, often surprising colors. The finished scarf will be soft - with no wax residue, and ready to wear home. Supply fee includes one 11" x 60" Crepe de Chine scarf and all supplies. (Additional scarves available.)
