DRAWING AND PAINTING WITH PASTELS

Explore the unique expression of drawing and painting with luxurious soft pastels. The immediacy of mixing rich and colorful textures right onto the paper surface is very satisfying, without waiting for drying time. Different
techniques for blending and overlaying color will be demonstrated. Experience a quick lively sketching style for drawings and also the process for creating well developed paintings. How to use and mix colors will be included with basic pastel fundamentals.
The focus is the natural world, still life and photographic images of nature. The instructor works with each individual for their expression and use of soft pastel (no oil pastels). No experience is necessary. A materials list will be given at registration.

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING

Focus is on instruction in Chinese style watercolor painting techniques. Demonstrations and personal
critiques by the instructor help students master this age-old medium. Students will be responsible
for acquiring personal painting supplies (approx. $50). Materials list provided upon registration.

LIFE DRAWING

Prerequisite: Basic Drawing or equivalent experience
Come experience drawing from a live model. Class is self-directed, each week focusing on a different part of the anatomy. Critiques of student work made upon request to the instructor. Emphasis is on gesture poses, short poses, ending with 20 minute poses. Please bring paper and drawing materials to class.

Plein
Air Painting gives you the immediacy
of being one with nature, to capture
the essence of the landscape, the
changing light and shimmering color.
We will paint the sky, water and reflections,
the sea, trees and foliage. Express
your personal vision either in a sketchbook
or typical painting format. We will
review watercolor techniques and discuss
composition. Experiment with pen,
ink, watercolor washes, and colored
pencils.
Different locations in the park and
throughout the city will give us a
variety of exciting subjects. The
instructor will prepare you for traveling
light for the ease of outdoor painting.
The experience will also be a source
to expand your observational powers
for imagery. NOTE:

SEEING THE ABSTRACT IN NATURE

Discover infinite abstract forms in the natural world to expand your creative expression. Learn to “see” in a new way by looking beyond the surface of things, to enhance your art process and self-expression. Outdoor observational sketches using a variety of techniques in line, form, structure, pattern, texture, scale color and light will be our focus. No painting experience necessary; bring inspiration for this adventure. Realistic painting will take on new life with the noticing/seeing exercises. Nature’s abstract language will also inspire your personal abstract imagery and exciting compositions. Choose to work in a variety of water-based paints or other media. A materials list will be provided upon registration.

WATERCOLOR BASICS

Missed the basics along the way? This class offers a simple overview of watercolor materials and techniques. We will take time to create a custom designed palette for each student after experimenting with a variety of pigments. We will look at new colors that have recently been developed that produce beautiful rich granulation.
In addition, we will explore the 12 basic watercolor edges and learn to use frisket to mask off areas for dramatic contrasts. Collecting samples from the park, we will combine pen and ink with watercolors to create botanical studies. Material list provided upon registration.

CLOTHED FIGURE DRAWING

In this course you will learn to see and draw the clothed human form in shapes as well as a whole. Part of the process will be learning how to draw folds and drapery on the figure. You will also be introduced to methods of capturing people in motion. We will be looking at drawings from artists of various time periods and incorporating them into our work. There will be short and long poses (1-20mins). We will be using dry as well as wet media and will also be covering how to establish a light source and plot shadows. Lecture, methods and techniques introduced in this course are geared toward building and developing a fearless approach to creating art in any medium. Students should bring 8.5x11 or larger sketchbook or loose sheets and a ball point pen (wide); instructor will provide all other materials and model.

Summer is a great time to get back into drawing. This mini-course focuses on the basics of line contour, shading, and perspective while exploring the hows and whys of composition. Students experiment with creating expressive marks with graphite and charcoal. For the first class bring an 18”x24” newsprint pad, 4B and 6B graphite pencil; a 4B and 6B charcoal pencil, a kneaded eraser, and paper tortillon drawing stump for blending.

THE PAINTERLY PRINT

Make creative one of a kind Monoprints unique in their translucency and spontaneity. Monoprinting is
a combination of printmaking, painting, and drawing mediums. Explore the printmaking process using
traditional printmaking techniques: hand pulled prints, collograph and relief printing techniques.
This will be a great introduction to printmaking if you have ever wanted to place your mark on paper.
Open to all levels. This class focuses on handmade printing techniques only, a printing press is not used.

In this course you will learn how to sculpt your figure drawings or character designs. You will
learn how to use your drawings to determine scale, plan out proportions, build the armature

BASIC & FANCY FELTING

It’s easy to turn wisps of sheep’s wool into durable scarves pouches and art works. Begin by learning
to dye wool fleece, and to form it into fabric. Then try out collaging, overdyeing and shaping
it. Add details with needlefelting. Felt is the most malleable of all the fiber arts–the fiber version
of Playdough! Students must provide old towels and a waterproof apron.

INTRODUCTION TO MOSAICS

This Mosaic Class gives you the basic to intermediate instruction on creating mosaic art; substrate selection, adhesives choices, method choice, and grouting techniques. It’s a fun class that exposes you to the ancient world of mosaic art. You will learn how to create a mosaic piece that at the same time you will have fun making. You will have an opportunity to create a stepping stone and gazing ball, picture frame, mirror, flower pot, 2D wall hanging, and more. You will explore cutting techniques,
adhesive choices, design layout and finish the piece with grouting selection. Please wear clothes you are not afraid to get dirty. Materials fee includes all materials to complete 2 projects. Additional materials
will be available for purchase if additional projects are desired.
