LIFE DRAWING
instructor: Virginia Banta
prerequisite: basic drawing or equivalent experience

Come experience drawing from a live model. Class is self-directed, each week focusing on a different part of the anatomy. Critiques of student work made upon request to the instructor. Emphasis is on gesture poses, short poses, ending with 20 minute poses. Please bring paper and drawing materials to class.

special note: You may drop in on this class if space allows. Drop in fee is $15 or $12 if you are enrolled in other classes at the studio. Enrolled students receive priority seating.

Designed for absolute beginners. Anyone who can hold a pencil can learn to draw with some degree of proficiency. With your commitment, you can and will! Primary emphasis is on seeing, using right-brain techniques. Materials list given at first class. Youth ages 10 and older are welcome when accompanied by an adult.

The Basics & Beyond

Have you been thinking about getting back into drawing or picking up that pencil for the first time? Guided exercises will train the eye to see and the hand to cooperate. The course focuses on the basics of contour line, light and shadow, perspective and proportion, and how to create expressive marks using graphite, charcoal, pen, ink and paint. Students explore developing strong compositions of themes such as still life, nature, and the figure. Materials list provided at registration. ABOUT PASTELS!

Want to move away from raditional painting methods and discover the joy of Pastels? Key words for this versatile and almost limitless medium are: Luscious, Strong and Vibrant! This 5 week workshop is a wonderful introduction to soft pastels and an opportunity for continuing pastelists to enhance a growing understanding. Students will have an opportunity to select their own imagery. Emphasis will be on developing techniques that will give a solid foundation for the expression of form directed toward landscape, figure, still life, and abstraction. We will work with a variety of papers and pastels, with instructor demo and informal lecture at each class. This is a thrilling way to learn about color and textural possibilities! Explore expressive brush strokesmaking bold and confident strokes to give your paintings a
fresh liveliness. And,we will focus on color harmony, how colors interact using Itten's "seven
color contrasts" to create beautiful and harmonious paintings. Other watercolor techniques include laying washes, glazing, blending, gradating, wet into wet and dry techniques. Still life set-ups and painting from photographs or pictures will enhance your painting skills. The instructor encourages individual expression and gives direction to each person. COMPOSING GLOWING
WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS

By popular request we will focus on the dark side of light - the shadows. Light and shadow create form. How does one paint the color, size and shape of a cast shadow and local shading of an object? We learn to create the mood of a painting with sparkling highlights and rich darks. Working with a variety of still life objects we will strengthen skills for seeing and painting shadows. Landscapes will be included later in the session. Watercolor techniques will be demonstrated as we explore this illusive appearance in painting. Material list provided upon registration.

WATERCOLOR BASICS

Missed the basics along the way? This class offers a simple overview of watercolor materials and techniques. We will take time to create a custom designed palette for each student after experimenting with a variety of pigments.

In addition, we will explore the 12 basic watercolor edges and learn to use frisket to mask off areas for dramatic contrasts. Collecting samples from the park, we will combine pen and ink with watercolors to create botanical studies. Material list provided upon registration

WATERCOLOR:
Journal Making & Outdoor Painting

level: beginning and continuing watercolorist

We will make custom watercolor journals for outdoor painting and have them bound. We will explore paints, brushes, papers and tools best suited for portability whether for traveling or ease of use. Practicing ways to paint that minimize the use of water, we will also examine techniques that give us quick, luminous landscapes and botanicals.

Taking field trips to pre-arranged locations, students at all levels will learn techniques for journaling and participate in weekly critiques. First class will meet at the Sharon Art Studio. Material list provided upon registration.

Want to jump start your creative expression and learn some new techniques? This class is designed for students who already have elementary watercolor skills. We will explore a variety of both traditional and innovative approaches including layering, pouring and some mixed media methods. This class offers an opportunity to expand further your understanding of color and composition, discover means to developing more complex imagery and work toward a personal mode of expression. CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
instructor: Madeleine Fu

Focus is on instruction in Chinese style watercolor painting techniques. Demonstrations and personal critiques by the instructor help students master this age-old medium. Students will be responsible for acquiring personal painting supplies (approximately $50). Materials list provided upon registration.

special note: You may drop-in on this class for $12 per class if space allows. If you do not have any Chinese brush painting supplies, you may purchase a brush and rice paper from instructor for $10.

CONTINUING MOSAICS
instructor: Ellen Soloway
Designed for beginning and repeat students, this class will teach you to mosaic with scrap glass, recycled mirrors, pottery, ceramic tile, shells, and other found objects. Create beautiful, decorative surfaces on materials including wood, plastic, glass, terra cotta, cement or metal. Some glass cutting experience is helpful but not essential. Youth, 15 and up, are welcome when accompanied by an enrolled adult. Materials fee covers tools and some materials. All other materials are the student’s responsibility.

note: New Students (new to glass or to studio) must attend first two classes to receive instruction that will not be repeated. Speak to instructor before registering if this is a problem.

OUT of the ATTIC: Mixed Media Seminar
instructor: Ellen Soloway
Designed for self-directed students who are interested in expanding the boundaries of their current work. This seminar is for individuals working in flat or three dimensions in a single medium or combining several. Ideal projects include collage and assemblage. A class discussion and topic will be highlighted weekly along with individual critiques and studio time. Possible topics include recycled materials, contemporary art and miniatures. Students will be asked to bring their own supplies and projects to discuss and work on during class time. No oil paint please. No storage area is available so artwork must be portable.
