PICTURING BIRDS

Birders and bird lovers will especially enjoy this 1-day workshop! Students will learn the fundamental pencil, ink, and watercolor techniques needed to depict our feathered friends in works on paper. The principal source material will be photographs of birds selected by the students. The instructor will facilitate the development of student confidence and technical fluency with these versatile and fun media. A materials list will be provided and students are required to bring their own materials.

EXPLORING TEXT IN ART
instructor: Rachelle Reichert
Level: Beginning & Continuing Students

In this class we will be examining text as a visual art form and its use in modern and contemporary visual art. In this workshop students will become familiar with text artists such as Rene Magritte, Hannah Hoch, Barbara Kruger, John Baldessari, Tracy Emin and street artists. These artists' techniques will be introduced and used as visual tools for the creation of unique exploration of text in student's own drawing, painting, photography or collage. A nominal materials fee will be collected in class and all materials will be provided.

REPORTAGE DRAWING SERIES

This series of classes is designed to free students to build student confidence in reporting what you see on-site in drawing. Each class is different, so enroll in one or the entire series! WORKSHOP #1 BUILDING CONFIDENCE
In this class you will work on removing the fear of
making mistakes. Various methods and exercises will
be introduced to strengthen your confidence as well as
design skills. We will be going to various locations in San
Francisco (near the studio) and drawing on site.

WORKSHOP #2 DRAWING IN THE PARK
In this class you will learn to become confident with line drawing. We will build your speed and endurance to draw for a longer time, capturing as much detail as possible. This is a form of drawing that will help illustrators, animators, caricature and portrait artists, people in fine art, as well as still life and figure drawing artists. Good also for those who are looking to begin to explore drawing!

WORKSHOP #3 DRAWING PEOPLE
In this one day workshop you will be introduced to methods that will help you become more comfortable with drawing people still as well as in motion while at the same time adding striking design elements. This is not a figure drawing course - although what you will learn in this workshop will help in figure drawing. The focus will be drawing the shapes and gestures in the clothed figure. We will be drawing on location in the park near the studio.

BASIC DRAWING & SKETCHING

This approachable workshop will give you fundamental concepts you need as you embark into the world of drawing and sketching! We will work with the concepts of value and contrast, as well as fundamental composition and rendering techniques. We will also learn about facial and body proportions, one/two/three-point landscape perspectives, a sense of movement in drawings for figures, and more. COUPLES ARE: A COUPLE HOURS OF ART

Grab your partner and explore ways to use composition techniques and color theory. This workshop is designed for a special connection between couples and art. We will also complete fun questionnaires to create relational/relationship art. The couples workshop is an ideal date and a way to promote creative expression for each other. NATURAL HISTORY STUDIES

This 2-day workshop is perfect for both amateur and experienced naturalists! Students will gain a basic command of the drawing and watercolor techniques needed to produce realistic and/or impressionistic studies of natural history objects. The primary source material will be photographs of flora and fauna chosen by the students, but will also include leaves, cones and other natural objects collected in Golden Gate Park. A materials list will be provided and students are required to bring their own materials.

DRAWING TOOL BOX

You will learn aspects of proportion, shading, perspective, how to set up lighting on a subject, contour and pointers for better figure drawing. I will introduce, demo and give reviews on many different art supplies I have used over the years.

INTRODUCTION TO SCREENPRINTING
instructor: Nicholas Behac
Level: Beginning Students

 

Silk screen is easy! No, seriously, just about anybody can do it for minimal costs and an easy set-up! All you need is a light, screen, squeegee and some inks to create your own DIY screen printing set-up at home. It is about as D.I.Y. as it gets and you will learn how to replicate the set-up if you would like to continue printing at home. The class will cover creating a film positive (image you want to print), exposing screens (the stencil of your image), and printing from your screen. You can print one color posters, art prints, cards, fliers, t-shirts, etc. A materials list will be provided and all students are required to bring their own basic supplies. A $20 fee will be collected to cover the costs of inks and silk screen frames.

BEADING BASICS WORKSHOP
instructor: Delia Munoz

Learn the simple techniques for stringing, wiring, knotting and the more complex but easy to master bead projects. This workshop is a condensed version of the Creative Bead Jewelry class and will cover intro to beading basics, jewelry strung from beads, and wired bead jewelry. No previous instruction is needed! A materials fee of $35 will
be collected in class and all materials will be provided. The instructor will also provide all the tools necessary to finish the projects in class.

CARTOONING WORKSHOP: MAKE A COMIC BOOK
instructor: Cara Goldstein

 

Are you a kid at heart? Your imagination and some quick techniques will help you be on your way to making the comic book or graphic novel of your dreams. We will talk about pioneers of the comic strip such as Winsor McCay and more contemporary masters such as Chris Ware, Gabrielle Bell, Lynda Barry, and any artists you'd like to share with the group. The skills covered will be character development, sequencing, movement, panel structure, narrative voice, backgrounds, and inking. The instructor is trained by famed Disney animator Al Baruch! You will leave with the start of your own comic book or graphic novel. Beginners welcome. Materials list provided. Bring a lunch.

This class will be focused on freeing your inner child and practicing some easy and fun techniques to gain confidence in basic painting and drawing. INTRO TO FELTING: HOW THE IMPRESSIONISTS FELT

Blend colorful, wispy bits of wool fleece together to assemble a felted wall piece. Works by your favorite Impressionist—Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse, Gauguin—or even your own impressionistic art will be used as inspiration for your felt piece. Plenty of images of Impressionists works will be on hand to use during the workshop. Learn to felt and shrink your piece into a solid piece of fabric that will be suitable for framing or for hanging on a wall.

ADVANCED STONE SETTING

ORGANIC HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS

Festoon your tree with hand-crafted ornaments you will fashion from paper, fabric and fleece. In the morning explore various Japanese & Chinese folded paper forms, then transform your forms through more folding techniques and the use of stiffened fabrics. In the afternoon, you will shape fanciful figures and animals with colorful wool fleece using a special needle. In addition, you can incorporate needle-felted baubles to your morning's creations. By the end of this workshop, you will take away unique hand-made decorations.

MAKE A FAIRY CROWN

Love crowns? Learn simple wire and other construction techniques to build a fabulous, beaded "spoke crown". This class will cover wire basics, the ins-and-outs of which beads to use and not use, and how to wear the finished piece. PRECIOUS METAL CLAY (PMC) FILIGREE

Learn the delicate art of Filigree—a light lacy like jewelry style. In this class you will learn how to construct a pendant or earrings out of PMC. PMC, a precious metal clay, is a medium that can be molded and manipulated like traditional clay, but when fired becomes a lovely piece of fine silver jewelry. All tools and materials will be provided to finish at least one project in class.

LEATHER MASKS & MIXED MEDIA
