COLOR MIXING, VALUE, CONTRAST
& COLOR HARMONY

instructor: Vesta Kirby
level: beginning and continuing artists

By popular request we will focus in depth on color mixing. We will explore how to achieve a lively result of mixing two colors to make a third, making
complements vibrate and using their muted effects and how to create rich earth hues. Practicing Value Contrast of light to dark hues will create
drama in your paintings. And, we will address color temperature. These will give dynamic color results for all your paintings including using strong foreground and subtle color for creating distance. And, finally, applying Color Harmony, how to put different colors together to enhance your watercolor paintings. Be ready for an exciting adventure in the ways of powerful COLOR! We will use both still life set ups and the landscape for paintings. Materials list provided on registration.

CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
Instructor: Madeleine Fu
 

Focus is on instruction in Chinese style watercolor painting techniques. Demonstrations and personal
critiques by the instructor help students master this age-old medium. Students will be responsible
for acquiring personal painting supplies (approx. $50). Materials list provided upon registration.
special note You may drop-in this class for $12 per class if space allows. If you do not have any
Chinese brush painting supplies, you may purchase a brush and rice paper from instructor for $10.

LIFE DRAWING
Instructor: Virginia Banta

Prerequisite: Basic Drawing or equivalent experience

Come experience drawing from a live model. Class is self-directed, each week focusing on a different part of the anatomy. Critiques of student work made upon request to the instructor. Emphasis is on gesture poses, short poses, ending with 20 minute poses. Please bring paper and drawing materials to class.

WATERCOLOR BASICS
Instructor: Mary Harden

Prerequisite: Beginning or Continuing Watercolorists


Missed the basics along the way? This class offers a simple overview of watercolor materials and techniques. We will take time to create a custom designed palette for each student after experimenting with a variety of pigments. We will look at new colors that have recently been developed that produce beautiful rich granulation.

In addition, we will explore the 12 basic watercolor edges and learn to use frisket to mask off areas for dramatic contrasts. Collecting samples from the park, we will combine pen and ink with watercolors to create botanical studies. Material list provided upon registration.

PAINTING ON CHINA

Learn the art of china painting! This class offers begining students an introduction to paints and practices and instruction in technique. Continuing students have a chance to work on individual projects and perhaps pick-up some helpful hints! NOTE Drop in students welcome for a fee of 12 dollars per day(checks only), paints, some brushes and oil medium available for use.

With your commitment, you can and will! Drawing skills are essential to all artists, be it ceramics, glass or painting. Primary emphasis is on seeing, using right-brain techniques. THURSDAY NIGHT DRAWING STUDIO:
The Basics & Beyond

level: beginning & continuing students

Autumn is the just right time to get motivated and start drawing. For the first half of this mini-course,
the basic strategies of line contour, shading, and perspective are covered. The second half introduces
how to creatively use watercolor washes and penlines. For the first class bring an 18”x24” newsprint pad, 4B and 6B graphite pencils, a 6B charcoal pencil, and a kneaded eraser.

FABRIC DYING ON THE QT
instructor: Joy-Lily

Q is for quilt, T is for t-shirt! Create colorful and washfast patterns, textures and gradations on your
cottons while you delve into the secrets of fiberreactive dyes. Explore layered dyepots, jar dyeing,
shibori patterning, gradient dyeing and beleaching out color. Overlay more than one technique on the
same yardage or shorts for unique effects. The payoff will be original fabrics for your quilts and/
or wearable art. BYO cotton Q/T.

INTRODUCTION TO MOSAICS
instructor: Leslie Mathie


This Mosaic Class gives you the basic to intermediate instruction on creating mosaic art; substrate selection, adhesives choices, method choice, and grouting techniques. It’s a fun class that exposes you to the ancient world of mosaic art. You will learn how to create a mosaic piece that at the same time you will have fun making. You will have an opportunity to create a stepping stone and gazing ball, picture frame, mirror, flower pot, 2D wall hanging, and more. You will explore cutting techniques, adhesive choices, design layout and finish the piece with grouting selection. Please wear clothes
you are not afraid to get dirty. Materials fee includes all materials to complete 2 projects. Additional materials will be available for purchase if additional projects are desired..

BOOK MAGIC

Have a yen to put your hands on a good book you created? Learn the craft of bookmaking. This class
will introduce students to the basics of making books. Experience the delight of creating functional and
beautiful handmade books from scratch! You can make your own travel journal or diary or family album. This course will guide you through the process of creating unique books using a variety of materials. During the session we’ll experiment with: simple hand sewn binding, accordion books, side-stitched book, books with wooden boards, miniature books. Let your creativity loose while
learning the bookmaking styles! Material list will be provided at first class.

ART OF COLLAGE
instructor: Dolores Gray


col·lage (n) french: derived from the word coller, meaning “to paste.” Papers, old photos, text, ephemera, fabric, found treasures, and the contents of your junk drawer are all the ingredients needed to create imaginative and fanciful collages and assemblages. Class will explore creating texture background, image transfers, and painted surfaces. Discussion of materials, adhesives, and papers for collaging.
