CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING
instructor: Madeleine Fu

Focus is on instruction in Chinese style watercolor painting techniques. Demonstrations and personal critiques by the instructor help students master this age-old medium. Students will be responsible for acquiring personal painting supplies (approximately $50). Materials list provided upon registration.

special note: You may drop-in this class for $12 per class if space allows. If you do not have any Chinese brush painting supplies, you may purchase a brush and rice paper from instructor for $10.

Learn the art of china painting: embellishing your pottery or ceramic pieces with an over glaze paint. This class will cover the basics in technique and an introduction to paints and practices. Continuing students have a chance to work on projects and pick up new tips.

LIFE DRAWING
instructor: Virginia Banta
prerequisite: basic drawing or equivalent experience

Come experience drawing from a live model. Class is self-directed, each week focusing on a different part of the anatomy. Critiques of student work made upon request to the instructor. Emphasis is on gesture poses, short poses, ending with 20 minute poses. Please bring paper and drawing materials to class.

special note: You may drop in on this class if space allows. Drop in fee is $15 or $12 if you are enrolled in other classes at the studio. Enrolled students receive priority seating.

EXPRESSIVE BRUSHWORK
& COLOR HARMONY

level: beginning & experienced watercolorists

Explore expressive brush strokes making bold and confident strokes to give your paintings a fresh liveliness. And, we will focus on color harmony, how colors interact using Itten's "seven color contrasts" to create beautiful and harmonious paintings. Other watercolor techniques include laying washes, glazing, blending, gradating, wet into wet and dry techniques. Still life set-ups and painting from photographs or pictures will enhance your painting skills. The instructor encourages individual expression and gives direction to each person. WATERCOLOR BASICS

Missed the basics along the way? This class offers a simple overview of watercolor materials and techniques. We will take time to create a custom designed palette for each student after experimenting with a variety of pigments. We will look at new colors that have recently been developed that produce beautiful rich granulation.

In addition, we will explore the 12 basic watercolor edges and learn to use frisket to mask off areas for dramatic contrasts. Collecting samples from the park, we will combine pen and ink with watercolors to createbotanical studies. Material list provided upon registration.

This class is for anyone who loves to draw or doodle with a pen. Perfect for beginners. We will begin with quick scribble sketching, learn 12 tools for greater accuracy, and then practice the “Big Four” classical markings for shade and shadow. We will finish an easy-to-use contemporary and highly portable inkwash technique suitable for field studies and travel journaling.

The Basics & Beyond

Winter is a great time to get motivated and start drawing. This mini-course focuses on the basic strategies of line contour, shading, and perspective while exploring the how’s and why’s of composition. Students experiment with creating expressive marks with graphite and charcoal. For the first class bring an 18”x24” newsprint pad, a 6B graphite pencil, a 6B charcoal pencil, and a kneaded eraser.

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
WITH PASTELS

Pastels are one of the most unique and beautiful color painting mediums. Following instructor's advice, students will be able to explore the pastel color palette and their personal artistic expression. Students will learn basic techniques from charcoal sketch to pastel finish up and will complete two to four finished paintings in this course. Pastel painting is for your JOY! You will find out your creativity from this class. Materials list for pastels provided at registration.

OUT of the ATTIC: Mixed Media Seminar

Designed for self-directed students who are interested in expanding the boundaries of their current work. This seminar is for individuals working in flat or three dimensions in a single medium or combining several. Ideal projects include collage and assemblage. A class discussion and topic will be highlighted weekly along with individual critiques and studio time. Possible topics include recycled materials, contemporary art and miniatures. Students will be asked to bring their own supplies and projects to discuss and work on during class time. No oil paint please. No storage area is available so artwork must be portable.

Papers, old photos, text, ephemera, fabric, found treasures, and the contents of your junk drawer are all the ingredients needed to create imaginative and fanciful collages and assemblages. Class will explore creating texture background, image transfers, and painted surfaces. Discussion of materials, adhesives, and papers for collaging.
