SHIBORI SCARF DYEING WORKSHOP
instructor: Joy-Lily

Shibori, the Japanese grandmother of tie-dyeing, is a process of shaped resist dyeing. This workshop will focus on wrapping silk scarves, painting them with Liquid Reactive silk dyes. Participants will learn the basics of shibori: folding, binding, dyeing, and heat setting the colors. Demonstrations in specific patterns such as the chevron, bamboo, diamond, web and flower folds will be given, however the emphasis is on originality, rather than replication of traditional patterns. Unlike traditional shibori, which is dyed by immersion in vats of a single color, my process is to paint the dyes directly onto the wrapped silk. This is faster, neater, and allows for multiple colors on the same work. Handouts provided, all materials included! In Glass Room.
